My Girl can Fly Pt. II (Some further notes on Memorial Day weekend)

I'm not remembering if I have reported on Rye's sleep habits. If I haven't, it is largely due to superstition, as I am not interested in jinxing anything. The fact of the matter is that things have gone really well for the Little Girl in the sleep department. We followed the teachings of Dr. Ferber (a man who seems to be loved and hated in equal parts, depending on whose little corner of the internet you land in) and have been graced with a six-month-old who typically chats herself to sleep within a few minutes of hearing the last lines of "Good Night Moon" and then sleeps eleven hours most nights. Naps were hard to predict for awhile, but she seems to have discovered how great a mid-day snooze can be as well.

This little Memorial day trip tested her ability to put all that sleep-learnin' into practice in strange environs (planes/hotel room play pens/etc). Things couldn't have gone better. Here's the evidence:

hotel pack-n-play at bedtime

napping in the king-size

pack-n-play nap (with bed-buddy)

My Girl Can Fly!

My little family took its first airplane ride as a little family this Memorial day weekend. We went to D.C. to visit and celebrate with Aunt Amina, Uncle Darius, and Rye's cousin-in-the-making. We all had a great time.

Hi-lights included:

Grandma E babysitting while Rhoda and I took in a Washington Nationals game

Cupcakes

An entire Sunday of dad/daughter time in Bethesda

Homemade pickles

etc, etc.

...here's some midflight video. I'd say "smooth sailing" is an apt description.

Rye really put her foot in her mouth...

If I were caught on tape doing this, I would do everything in my power to destroy the evidence. Rye does it and it's one of the five most adorable things I've ever seen:

German Engineered and Totally Over the Top

I got this on craigslist and I'm thinking about selling the house and just moving the family into it. It's got three bedrooms and one of those whisper-flush toilets.

Six Months

I know there's no such thing as a "six month birthday." It is quite possible (probable) that I've made fun of people (parents) who celebrate such trivialities.

So imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning teeming with pride, as the freshly christened father of a six month old.

Rye Opal is six months old today. And despite the fact that many have come before her in that endeavor, I'm amazed by this occurrence and can't wait to see what the next six months bring.

Happy Birthday, Rye...and weird friends.

First 5k

On Saturday, Rye, Rhoda and I ran our first 5k as a family. Rye was a champ, despite the unseasonably cold weather and her parents' lack of preparation (socks work as gloves in a pinch, by the way). I think it took us like an hour to run 3 miles, but we ran 3 miles, so there's that.

The aforementioned lack of preparation resulted in no photos of Rye in her all terrain stroller braving the elements. I did, however, manage to have Rhoda snap a post-race photo of me and the Little Girl (in the back-yard). She's wearing a bear costume...'cause it's warm...and cute to the point of absurdity.

The Saturday Post

I'm still a sucker for a morning paper. Half the time I read little more than a third of the Saturday edition, but I still like the way it feels in my hands and looks on my bed. I know its a dying medium and that makes me feel like I should do my part to keep it alive. So I've introduced my daughter to the time honored tradition of reading the Saturday morning paper with a cup of coffee.

Rye, however, sees the big picture. In today's edition of the Rye Report, we capture the Little Girl's first interpretive dance. It is on the topic of the relationship between digital and print media. Rye plays the part of digital media. My newspaper plays itself.
